A Final Episode
The reflection of Donna on the dark computer screen looked both aged and distant. Diane was dead, and it was her fault. Suddenly she slapped herself hard across the cheek and then reached up, pulling a handful of hair out of her scalp. She felt nothing; her mind had become numb and lifeless. Soon it would be over, she knew that now. Even if Jack didnât kill her, and part of her really hoped that he would, it didnât matter. To imagine a long life now, after what she had done, would be like trying to chase after a mirage. A sharp pain suddenly stabbed her belly, causing Donna to briefly buckle over. Maybe thatâs how it would happen, maybe this unnatural creature inside of her would rupture, spewing its poison into Donnaâs body, giving her the agonizing death that she deserved. Irony at its best.
The phone began to ring, but she didnât hear it; couldnât hear it. Its relentless clanging seemed to go on for hours, and then suddenly died, much like Diane. Donnaâs mind was looking for a way out. She found herself climbing back into the comfort of her Jerry Springer dream. She imagined herself, once again, sitting in front of the audience, only this time they were all silent, each of their faces frozen, like snapshot pictures of rage. Standing in the middle of the stage stood a long pole with stacked pieces of freshly cut wood at its base. Jerry Springer approached her as she sat tied to a foam-cushioned chair, only it wasnât Jerry Springer. This man was much taller with dark hair slicked down and parted in the middle. His thread-like lips were split upward revealing rotted teeth under a pencil-thin mustache and in his hand was a red parchment, which he then held up towards the audience. Whore! It read. The crowd jumped to their feet screaming Burn Her! Burn the Whore! Donna sat there in silence, it was, after all, what she deserved.
The computer screen suddenly began to flicker in front of her, like a fluorescent bulb trying to come to life. Donna watched this with emotionless eyes. The light on the screen took hold and jumbled letters began to crisscross, pausing for a moment, then raced off the other way. Donna leaned closer as they slowly began to crawl towards the center of the screen until stopping to spell...Look Behind You.
At first, Donna refused, knowing that if she did turn around it would be over. Somehow she knew that whatever was there was going to take the last bit of her sanity. A shudder ran through her body, like she had suddenly stepped out into the frigid air.
âDon,â said a voice. âDon, look at me.â The chill that she was feeling before suddenly turned to ice. Her hands began to shake as a million unseen insects began crawling over the surface of her brain. There was only one person who called her that.
âWas it worth it, Don? Was his dick worth what you did to me?â With no other choice, Donna slowly turned her swivel chair.
